π Location: Babubock Village, South-West Region, Cameroon
π©βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Beneficiaries: 200+ primary school children
Background
Government Primary School Babubock is the only functioning primary school in the village. For years, it has provided a pathway to education for children from several quarters. However, the building β constructed decades ago β has never been renovated.
Before the Anglophone crisis, the infrastructure was already in poor condition. Since 2017, the conflict has worsened the situation, with gunfire damaging the walls, military raids destroying parts of the building, and lack of maintenance leaving the classrooms unsafe.
Current Situation
As our photos and videos show, the school is in a deplorable state:
-
The roof leaks, allowing rainwater to damage the structure.
-
The ceiling is collapsing due to water damage.
-
The floors are cracked, with rainwater seeping into the ground.
-
The walls have bullet holes from crossfire during the conflict.
-
Furniture and learning materials β benches, tables, chalkboards β are destroyed or missing.
Children cannot learn in these conditions. Without urgent renovation, the school risks total collapse, forcing children to walk long distances through insecure areas to attend classes elsewhere.
Our Response
In collaboration with Nature Cameroon (lead implementing partner, 21 yearsβ experience) and Impact Circle for Nature (IC4N) (co-implementer), we are working to:
-
Replace the roof and ceiling to stop leakage.
-
Repair cracked floors and damaged walls.
-
Install new benches, tables, and chalkboards.
-
Ensure a safe and dignified learning environment for over 200 pupils each year.
Community Contribution
The renovation will be closely supervised by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), school administration, and community elites. Villagers will contribute by providing local materials (sand, stones, water) and volunteer labor.
Why This Project Matters
-
Education Access: The school is the only primary school in Babubock. Renovating it ensures children do not drop out or face unsafe travel.
-
Resilience and Hope: Restoring the classrooms sends a strong message that despite conflict, education remains a community priority.
-
Long-term Impact: The renovated school will serve 200+ children annually for years to come, easing transition to the newly awarded secondary school in the village.
